Taking the Perfect Photograph

Try and take as many photographs as you can; we can sort through them later to determine which best suits a portrait!

Here are a few tips for taking a great photograph:

Personality: The most important quality to capture on camera for your pet portrait is your pets personality. Try and get a photograph of your pet doing what he loves to do most; a photograph that depicts who he is to you; so you'll have the memory of his presence for years to come.

Positioning: A view from your pet's level works the best. You may need to lay on the ground to get the perfect shot; but try and get the most natural pose possible. An angled view works great, and try to get many detailed photographs of your pets face. I like to work from a variety of shots, and can piece together your favorite photographs to make the perfect portrait. Also, If someone needs to hold your pet in position, this can easily be cropped out of the portrait, as well as hands, etc. that may have gotten into the picture.

Lighting: Try and use as much natural light as possible; by a window, or outside if it's possible! Natural lighted photographs allow a great amount of detail, and the colours are more true to life! Just try not to get into direct sunlight; a bright or slightly overcast day is best.

Please remember that the final portrait can only be as detailed as the photographs given to me to work with. With this in mind, photographs should be clear, high quality, and in the colour and pose that you want for the final portrait. Digital photos are preferred, or mailed photographs are fine, as long as they meet the guidelines above. A photo taken on an angle rather than directly from the side or head on makes the best portrait!
